Although Ottawa County’s $29.8 million and Allegan County’s $2.5 million estimated damage totals topped 2008 flood damage estimates, no help came from the federal government as it did the year before in 2008.

It’s supposed to be a once-in-a-century event, but the torrential rains crumbled roads and flooded basements in Holland, MI in 2009. For the second June in a row, a nighttime deluge that fell at the rate of several inches per hour stranded cars across the region and saw kayakers paddling through downtown Holland. The storm left gaping caverns where roads used to be, sending chunks of pavement and culverts floating away. Stalled cars littered roads & became impassable. Thousands were without power at one point.

The damage is so extensive, Holland Mayor Al McGeehan said he likely will seek federal funds for repairs and cleanup. People have substantial damage to their homes. “And it’s not one particular neighborhood. It’s all over the city and the greater Holland area.” Ottawa County officials also are likely to request disaster aid. Ottawa County Board of Commissioners declared a state of emergency. On 24th Street west of U.S. 31, the storm left a huge gully where pavement used to be. Nearby Holland resident Barbara Kragt, said her basement was flooded to the joists. Not far away, Jann Woodall stood next to a mound of carpet, insulation and drywall that was pulled out of her basement. Her Maple Creek condominium was one of about 10 units on 24th Street flooded when a creek near the property overflowed, sending 2 feet of water into the basements. Woodall, who fears her insurance will not pay for damage she estimates at $20,000 because it does not cover floods.
